HMCS Scotian held a Change of Command parade and ceremony on 3 October 2015 for the official transfer of command from LCdr Derek Vallis to LCdr Owen Brine who assumed command of HMCS Scotian on 25 June 2015. The Reviewing Officer was Capt(N) Alex Grant, NAVRES Atlantic Region Captain.

The parade featured HMCS Scotian Ship’s Company, which included two platoons and a guard. Keeping the pace and providing some musical accompaniment was the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps IROQUOIS’s band. In attendance was Councillor Gloria McCluskey (Halifax Regional Municipality), Capt(N) Derek Moss (MARLANT Chief of Staff) and Col. Donald Walsh (5th Canadian Division HQ), along with other invited guests including family and friends of LCdr Vallis and LCdr Brine.

Presentations were made to the outgoing Command Officer, LCdr Vallis, including a shadow box containing HMCS Scotian’s commissioning pennant flown during his tenure as Commanding Officer, and a painting by LS Margareta Boivin, a local artist and member of HMCS Scotian.

During his speech, LCdr Vallis reflected on his time as a “Scotian”, first joining the unit in 1984 as a Radar Plotter before becoming a MARS Officer through the University Naval Training Division (UNTD) program. During LCdr Brine’s address, he spoke of his excitement towards taking command of HMCS Scotian. “I am proud to be your Commanding Officer,” he said while addressing the ship’s company. LCdr Brine joined the Naval Reserve in HMCS Scotian in 2012 following a 20 year career in the Regular Force.

Upon completion of the parade, the Ship’s Company cheered ship for the outgoing Commanding Officer, LCdr Vallis. The event was capped off with a reception on the drill deck.
