Lieutenant-Commander Bernard Cato

Sailor Profile / May 20, 2014

Logistics Officer, Canadian Forces Base Halifax

I am in charge of the Customer Services Division for Base Logistics, which means that I supervise all procurement for the East Coast fleet.

I love the day-to-day interactions with my employees, the uniqueness of the job and the challenges that arise. No two days are the same.

I was born and raised in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Montréal. I graduated from a business program at Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel (CEJEP), a general and vocational college in Québec.

I joined the Naval Reserve in 1975 as a summer job and enjoyed it enough that I decided to join the Regular Force in September 1979 as a supply technician. I decided to be commissioned from the ranks since I had achieved most of my goals as a non-commissioned member and was looking to broaden my horizons.

Travelling is a huge reward – I saw 17 countries in my first year of sailing. My job, as a whole, is rewarding as I am in charge of providing support for all required materials, rations or equipment to the whole fleet.

It’s a wonderful experience that provides incredible job opportunities. It creates financial stability, but you have to be passionate about it as there will be challenges.
