Esquimalt Harbour Projects - Information

A/B Jetty Recapitalization Project

The A/B Jetty Recapitalization Project will replace the existing ship berthing facilities known as “A” Jetty and “B” Jetty which are over 75-years-old and past their intended service life. The new jetties will be larger, modern and more versatile to accommodate the Navy’s current and future ships. In coordination with these jetty upgrades, DND is remediating contaminated seabed areas beneath each jetty through the Esquimalt Harbour Remediation Project.

„Current Status: existing “B” Jetty was demolished, remediation work is complete, and site preparation work is continuing.

Anticipated Timeline: 2014 – late 2020s

Small Boat Float Project (ML Floats)

The Small Boat Float Project will provide three new floating jetties for smaller vessels at the CFB Esquimalt Dockyard. These new jetties will replace the function of the existing Motor Launch (ML) Floats, which are nearing the end of their useful life. Remediation of contaminated sediments in the project area was completed during the Constance Cove Remediation Project prior to construction.

„Current Status: Construction expected to begin in summer 2019

Anticipated Timeline: 2017 – 2021

Esquimalt Harbour Remediation Project sites. The Esquimalt Harbour Remediation Project is addressing historical contamination that has accumulated in the harbour seabed after almost 200 years of commercial, military, and industrial use. This project is removing contaminated sediments from six areas of the harbour where DND operates –  “A” Jetty, “B” Jetty, “C” Jetty, “ML” Floats, “Y” Jetty, and Lang Cove – to provide a healthier, more diverse habitat for marine life.

Current Status: Remediation is underway

Anticipated Timeline: 2016 - 2020

Constance Cove Remediation Project

DND has completed remediation work on the Esquimalt Harbour seabed between “Y” Jetty and the “ML” Floats in the southeast area of Esquimalt Harbour.

Current Status: Remediation completed in 2018

Anticipated Timeline: A monitoring program is underway to confirm harbour health improvements

Central Constance Cove Remediation Project

The Central Constance Cover Remediation Project will remove contaminated sediments from the seabed in the center of Constance Cove in Esquimalt Harbour. This project addresses remaining historical contamination between “Y” Jetty and “C” Jetty.

Current Status: Remediation is anticipated to start in fall 2019.

Anticipated Timeline: Remediation will be completed by March 2020.
